HHT is Over!!
The HHT is over. Space Ghost has given the victory to the Rebel Alliance. Esoteric Alliance came in 2nd. And Cloud Nine led by Xanos came in third. Space Ghost has explained the following reason for the controversey surrounding Megahertze’s ability to come back after 5 deaths:
“The Reason for Mega Hertze’s Return after 5 deaths is believed to be the result of going form one version of TWGS to anorther version and then Returningback to the previuos version. The only people who ever had any Access to the game’s tedit was EleQ and Fuse,,,and fuse didnt even know the he could till this happened,…..Server changes happend to this Tourny and for that I’m Sorry…..”
Sometimes these things cant be helped. TWGS is still in beta after all. The bugs always come out at all major games. To top it off, this game was orginally at Eclipse hosted by Intergate with one set of global settings. Then it had to go to the Home Sector/Stardock BBS, whose global settings are completely different. If the file was also sent from one version of the TWGS to another version, it could affect the game as well. I also noticed Eleq upgraded to .43 then downgraded back to .39. All this can really affect one game greatly.
Now I want to respond to a post on the SilverWings website that got me REALLY REALLY mother-f**king pissed off!. Big D posted this comment on the SW website.
“OK. Well that pretty much was the opposite of what another well respected member of the Tradewars community said when he stated that he was almost positive that Timberwolf had tedit access to be able to update the HHT game stats for certain newspages. Anyway, that’s his story and he’s sticking to it. “
Big D, are you IMPLYING that I had something to do with this controversy????????? Fuck no! What reason would I have to do this? What would I possibily gain by this???? I’ll have you know I never got TEDIT access to the HHT since it was moved to the SD BBS. I have asked Eleq a few times for access and finally got a response a few days ago only to find out the admin password was different than the Eclipse Server. The same day SG shut down HHT, Eleq finally gave me access to get past the BBS and into the port to the TWGS adminstration. I then typed my name and the admin password for the HHT I was given when it was at Eclipse/Intergate. I thought Space Ghost gave me a local admin password and it seemed that the admin password wasnt sent with the file and Eleq used a different password so I never got in the TEDIT at the SD BBS TWGS . The HHT was already shut down so I decided then to just forget it and let SG deal with it.
Big D, I take excellent pride in my honesty and reputation for all the games I run and I never..ever..have thought about using the editor..not even once..to help benefit a player or two. And I’m greatly insulted by the comment you posted on the SW website. I demand a public apology in all the Y-groups forums and on your website and also the comment retracted from your website. I also want this “well respected member of the Tradewars community” identified. This player then also should make the apology for EVEN thinking I had something to do with the Megahertze controversy.
Or..there will be HELL to pay. You got my word on that.
The WTC Is Upon Us!

Your SETI@home Not Working? Here’s Why!
If you haven’t noticed, SETI@home has been down the past day or so…Frogland BBS sent me an ICQ just recently with a link to this site, stating why the SETI@home network has been down.
Hopefully they get it back up and running soon! Once it is back up, if you’re interested in helping out SETI@home, click on the image in the lower, right-hand corner of each page on this site to view the TW2002 group’s page and sign-up!
Haunted Halloween Tournament Officially Over
Congratulations to The Rebel Alliance for dominating the HHT 2000! The team consisted of Stonewall (Red CEO), Moldar, Chunky, Oso, Devil Dog (Blue CEO), and Neo! They played one hell of a game and I was lucky enough to be eliminated by Stonewall one night when I wasn’t able to make extern .Second place went to: Esoteric Alliance – Ovid, Planet Hopper, Coale, White Knight, Commando, and Bazzaarr.
In a CLOSE Third Place: Cloud Nine – Xanos, Nightwing, Brilliant Beast, Tienzi, Reydar, and Vasilis.
Congrats to all of these players for sticking it out until the bitter end!

update
The Development Team section of the site is now up and running, albeit in a very temporary state. The Development Team name will be announced alongside the merger with another major Trade Wars website, at which time the development team will take over that site’s domain name and have its own dedicated website.
I’m going to work some on getting this front page cleaned up tonight, and will probably create a timeline of the “Slashdot Effect” just as a memoir of perhaps the single busiest day a TWGS server has ever endured. Want to talk about a stress test? The server has accepted over 4,000 connections since the Slashdot post. In the past two days DagBot has cleared out a countless number of player records under accounts that were only used once, as well as a huge amount of duplicate accounts. Still, dozens of players have continued to return to play their daily turns, and in many cases, in several different games. The server itself seemed to run smoothly despite the online chaos the day of the post. Unfortunately the past three days have seen a dramatic increase in mail file corruption, and today, sector data in game b became corrupted, which resulted in several players being kicked out of the game after entering the offending sector, and admins being kicked from TEDIT when trying to access the sector record to move players to safety before “blackholing” the sector. I later repaired the damaged sector manually, and the game is back on track.

Slashdot Updtate: This will be the final update regarding the OLGN.COM TWGS server having been “Slashdotted.” At 5:30 EST sharp, Kitty’s Playground received it’s 7,000th hit! Yes, in the course of a week, Kitty’s Playground has had well over 2,000 hits, the peak traffic coming on Feb 23 with 892 hits. Thanks to c843247-a.rchdsn1.tx.home.com for being the 7,000th hit to Kitty’s Playground! Preliminary indications are that the OLGN.COM TWGS server has picked up perhaps 50 to 75 new users in the course of two days, and we’re currently working very hard with all these new players (and former players as well) to make their Trade Wars experience as fun as possible.
Slashdot Update: The heaviest portion of the Slashdot “attack” seemed to have ended this morning. Around 7 am we were averaging a minimum of ten users online at any given time. By early afternoon that had steadily climbed into the low twenties before dropping back down to the high teens where it is as of this post at 2:32 EST. Thanks to jc-235197.oz-online.net who was our 6,000th hit to Kitty’s Playground at 5:57 am February 23rd. Since then, we’ve already received an additional 350 hits. With luck, we will surpass the 7,000 mark by this evening for a net gain of 2,000 hits in two days time! We expect another surge of players to arrive later tonight as the “news” that Trade Wars is still alive and kicking is spread even further yet!
Slashdot Update: People are still trickling in from the Slashdot post, which last time was checked was still on the main page. It appears that overnight we had a average of ten users playing at any given time and another 200 total connections since I turned in for the night at 3 am. We’ve gotten an excellent response from new players–many are showing a definite interest in learning the game, a belief backed up by the incredible number of hits Kitty’s Playground has received to the Library section, in particular the Trade Wars Instructions. Over 6,000 hits now for the site, an increase of 1,000 in only a day and a half! We’ve also found a lot of former players who thought Trade Wars was dead, never to return again. “I miss sitting in front of a computer for hours playing Trade Wars,” one former player commented after joining a game.
We’ll keep the site updated as best as possible with the latest news in our efforts to bring in both new players and former players. For now, its off to Observer mode I go to help our guests get acquainted with the game!
Wow! That’s all I can say! Last night at 6:10 pm the olgn.com server was Slashdotted! Now mind you, Slashdot gets about 15 million hits a day, and sends out even more news-based email. I wasn’t even aware of the posting until I watched as the server suddenly had not one, not two, not even three, but ten connections open up almost simultaneously. Within minutes, we were up to 20 connections, then thirty. They connected and disconnected. More connected, checked out the games and disconnected. And on and on it went. Around 8:00 pm the effect was overwhelming. 93 simultaneous connections! Granted, those 93 didn’t last all but a couple minutes, and by 9:30 it had dropped back down to a very moderate 30 players. By 1 am, it was down to around a dozen. Throughout the night we recruited temporary assistant server admins to stay in games and answer questions, as a majority of the players we received had never played before. I spoke with one player who played TW200 (that’s Gary’s 200 sector game) something like 12 years ago. He thought TW was dead. He’ll be back. Similar stories were told in almost all the games!
The net effect? Max simultaneous connections: 93. Total connections between 6 pm and 11 pm: 677. Web traffic: Approximately 983 hits occured after 6 pm and between 11 pm.
Now we sit and wait and see what response we get from the IRC bots that broadcast Slashdot articles and from the email.
Special Announcement: Has Kitty’s Playground hit the big time? Naww, but as of 10:43 EST we received our 5,000th hit! Ever since I first posted the site to Tripod, then on Intergate, and finally to its permanent home here on my home network, I’ve been amazed at the number of people that have visited my little upstart web site. Thanks to gateway.sask.trlabs.ca for being the five thousandth visitor to Kitty’s Playground! This only reinforces my desire to continue expanding and push Icehawk harder in the planned rollout of several new and exciting services that no other site currently has! This and more coming soon!
Yes, I have responded to Gypsy’s Yahoogroups post, and I’ve responded in a much more appropriate place–here! I was very disheartened by the fact that he would choose to make a post like that in Yahoogroups. While I ask for criticism, that severe of criticism should be left to private e-mail where it doesn’t have any possibility of creating a free-for-all in a public forum.
So for those of you who want to do some more serious reading, here’s the link to my reply to Gypsy.
Check out Timberwolf’s response to my interview with Aitvo here…
Also check out Silver Wings’ response to the interview here…
The interview seemed to generate a fairly decent response… the second highest ever number of hits in one day. Considering the interview didn’t go live on the site until around 5:30 makes this the single best hits per hour that the site has ever had. To everyone who stopped in, and especially to everyone who took the time to read the interview in its entirity, thank you!
If you have any comments about the interview, please feel free to send me an email or an ICQ. Be it compliment or criticism, every email or message I receive will be answered. Can’t promise I’ll get back to you in the next two or three hours, as I’m about to take my nap like I do every 20 hours or so, but I will answer every mail or message in due time.
Leprechaun Hunt
Remember the quickie game I wanted to do that was posted on here a while ago? The Family Entertainment Network is hosting the Leprechaun Hunt on March 17, time TBA. Here is the objective:
21 players will be cloaked in fedspace, all named “Leprechaun1”, “Leprechaun2”, etc. All will be in scouts. Next day’s extern, they will be towed. Object is to find and kill each one. Winner is the one who kills the most Leprechauns in the game. This game could be over in as quick as two days to as much as 7 days when I call the game over on the 24th and award the most kills to the winner.(I go on vacation a couple days later).
This is a single player competition which means it is everyman for himself. One day entry then game is closed to new players at midnite server time and Macahan will be watching for dupes very closely.Extern runs at 4am server time I believe and the Leprechauns will only be towed once so if not all are found on the first day after towed, they still will be in the same spot the second day and so on.
I will award a small prize to the winner in the form of a $5 certificate from a fast food place such as Taco Bell, Burger King, KFC, McDonalds, and Pizza Hut. Not much of a prize, yeah I know, but i’m not rich 🙂 Most games dont have prizes anyways 🙂
Some settings are as follows: 800 turns, 5000 sectors, 50% rob and steal rate, & 200% port regen to allow blues plenty of trading cash. The only ship edit is that the CFS will have the following edits done: 1 tpw, 2 to 1 odds, and carry one photon. All other CFS specs remain default.
Exclusive USO Update!
Here’s an update that I received from the owner/founder of the USO, Bad Girl, when asked for a current update on the tournament. There are also some interesting facts thrown in there about this year’s USO so far!“The USO is going great. We had 114 players registered and 93 logged into play. The first night there were many poddings and killings. Mr Clean still ranks as #1 killer and podder with 31 poddings and 19 kills…but watch out that New Zealander XIDE is approaching him fast with 18 kills. Many players have come to shine in this tourney…we are seeing some excellent playing from players who normally only play on small servers. We have been hearing from many of the players that is has been the best tournament so far. Those that have been eliminated have come back to tell us they had a great time and will be back next year for sure.
Here are a few highlights:
So far 18 people have been podded by Nav Haz and 6 people have been killed from it.
12 people CBY’d
4 people have been podded by mines and 3 have been killed by mines.
1 person has been podded by corbo
2 have been podded by planets
1 has been blown up and killed on a port
We have had a small problem with TWGS but Eleq fixed it as soon as he became of aware of the problem. This tourney has been running very well. For those that didnt play …well all I can say is you are missing a fun one!
Bad Girl”
Thanks Bad Girl!! As a player in the USO myself, I must say I’m having a wonderful time! One thing that Bad Girl forgot to add was that one person so far has been podded by Captain Zyrain (way to go DarkOne {Grin}).
If you missed out on the tournament this year, be sure to check it out next year! For up-to-date information on this year’s game check out the official USO 2001 site!
